If you are concerned with the precipitation of mania, you can have on hand Zyprexa or Depakote. Each of these two drugs would work faster than lithium in an acute episode. You would probably want to make your starting dose of Zyprexa as 10mg and begin Depakote at 1000mg. The Depakote dose acts as a loading dose and allows blood levels to approach therapeutic values more quickly. If necessary, you can move up to 1500mg or 2000mg.
If you are taking Lamictal already, and you wish to use Depakote, you will need to reduce your dosage of Lamictal by half.
