Lamictal CAN help with depression and is used as a mood stabiliser. I didn't get any side effects from it except it made me more depressed. Maybe he didn't prescribe because you have to titrate it so slowly and you are no longer going to be his patient.

Trileptal is essentially Tegretol with an oxygen atom attached to it if you were to look at the molecular structure. That is what makes it have less side effects than Tegretol. Trileptal is an anti-convulsant as is Lamictal.

Some people are able to use Lamictal as mono-therapy for depression. However I have never heard of anyone getting relief from their depression with Trileptal with the exception of SLS who did for a brief period (I think ... my brain is fuzzy).
