Mecamylamine is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Inversine® (mecamylamine HCl), our product approved by the FDA. Inversine® is approved for the management of moderately severe to severe essential hypertension and uncomplicated cases of malignant hypertension. We are conducting a Phase II clinical trial of mecamylamine as an add-on therapy to citalopram hydrobromide, a commonly prescribed anti-depressant, in patients with major depressive disorder who do not respond or do not fully respond to citalopram hydrobromide. Preliminary results of a clinical trial conducted by third-party researchers in 2004 showed that mecamylamine had anti-depressant effects in patients who were not fully responding to another commonly prescribed anti-depressant, when used as an add-on therapy to that anti-depressant.
TC-5214 is one of the enantiomers of mecamylamine hydrochloride. Enantiomers are chemical substances that are mirror images of each other and have the same chemical but different biological properties. We have licensed rights under a pending patent application that, if issued, would provide us with composition coverage for TC-5214 for use as a pharmaceutical. TC-5214 has shown anti-depressant effects in several preclinical models. If our Phase II clinical trial of mecamylamine is successful, we may accelerate the development of TC-5214 as an add-on therapy for depression.
