Be firm. It's YOUR body and YOUR life! People on this site seem to have pretty good luck arguing that they have taken med X in the past and it helped. And in your case, you've also taken the alternative and that didn't work well for you b/c of the s/e's!
I don't really understand why some pdocs are so hung up on the "addictive" nature of the benzos. My pdoc was always very cool abt in and in fact would never refer to addiction, but rather "physical dependence." And frankly, I don't see the difference b/t the physical dependence assoc w/ a benzo and the physical dependence associated with other drugs. I mean, most all psych meds cannot be stopped cold turkey--why don't we worry abt "addiction" to them?
If you get resistence from pdoc abt going along w/ this combo, try to find out what exactly he is worried abt: you'll use it to get high or sell it on the street?! I don't know, I can't figure it out. Try to respond to his concerns. I'd also use the "physical dependence" terminology which sounds so much better than "addiction."
Let us know how it goes!
Best,
EE
