SELEGILINE TRANSDERMAL SYSTEM (STS)

Posted by charlie-no-nose on August 31, 2005, at 23:23:10

I believe the STS has been approved to treat depression, to improve cognition as well as behavioral performance, to increase longevity (at least in rats), to treat Alzheimers and Parkinsons diseases, and for ADHD. (I'm not sure how it is supposed to effect the latter.) Has anybody been prescribed this? In one double-Blind study in which the efficacy of this as a treatment for depression was studied, both groups were also put on a tyramine-restricted diet. I didn't understand this as I understood l-deprenyl had a greater affinity for MAO, Type B, than for Type A and that with the additional use of a transdermal system, the liver and gut were essentially avoided and thus the need for a special diet. Also, some studies suggested adverse reactions with the Tri-cyclics and SSRI's. Is anyone taking these simultaneously? Also, has anyone combined the STS with amphetamines? I would be interested in knowing the age of anyone prescribed this, as well as to what exactly it is being prescribed. charlie-no-nose
