It was a double-blind procedure for which observations were made by staff and physicians. I was asked to take a few psychometric tests, but they were not set up as a before-after treatment comparison. My guess is that the most weight was given to the self-rating forms and a global assessment made by the physician who saw me every two or three days.
It is interesting that among a cohort of patients, it was the fellow patients who would first notice signs of improvement in a proband, even before the proband fully recognized it for themselves. We knew immediately when someone was getting well enough to be discharged. The responses to treatment were that robust.
