In a recent study, there was quite a significant effect for T3 augmentation for atypicals vs melancholics . In this small sample (n=20), atypicals exhibitied a 100% treatment response and an 80% remission rate. This is the first study to look at T3 augmentation by depression sub-type. Similarly, this is the first study to only include SSRI treatment rather than mixed treatment of TCAs and SSRIs. Most importantly, there was no relationship between the outcome of T3 augmenations and thyroid function tests before or after treatment. Lastly, no differences by gender were reported.
