My pdoc has always prescribed Wellbutrin for me in the morning (I'm a total insomniac) but if the dose is too much for me I do have trouble sleeping. I've never taken the XL kind though, just regular and SR. If you can't sleep, you can't sleep so calling your Pdoc seems reasonable to me but I dunno. Maybe you could try taking it a few hours earlier and see if that helps at all? And then if it does maybe a few hours earlier again? I don't know if it looks bad to a pdoc if you switch the time of taking the med on your own. Maybe you could conveniently forget to take it at night so you have to take it in the morning.
