Lamictal and Piracetam

Posted by Excellent camper on July 24, 2005, at 16:02:13

Hi all,

I've been taking Lamictal (150 mg) for the last five months or so with good results. It keeps my depression in check, and I feel more confident and in control. (When I miss two days--as I have once--I feel all the old ruminations and gloom come rushing back in.) I wrote earlier about having some really magic days with Lamictal in comination with Wellbutrin. That level of clarity and energy was short-lived, and I stopped the Wellbutrin.
Since then, I've been steady, but not ecstatic. I also still have some problems focusing and remembering what I was doing from one moment to the next. (My counselor thinks I have ADD.)

I just re-read a post from Roman in '99 who credited Piracetam in combination with Choline for helping his ADD. I'm willing to give this a try. Wondering:

1. Who do people in the U.S. buy from? I'm considering http://relentlessimprovement.com.

2. Anyone have any thoughts on Lamictal/Piracetam interactions? Although the exact mechanism of Lamictal is not known, here's what I have found:

"Thought to exert its anticonvulsant effect by stabilizing presynaptic neuronal membranes. Lamotrigine inhibits sodium currents by selectively binding to the inactivated state of the sodium channel and subsequently suppresses the release of the excilatory amino acid, glutamate."

Here's what I found about piracetam's mechanism:
"Glutamic acid (glutamate) is the chief excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain. Piracetam has little affinity for glutamate (glutamate) receptors, yet it does have various effects on glutamate neurotransmission."

Both affect glutamate transmission, which concerns me. Any thoughts out there in Babble Land?

I'll probably go ahead and order and be a guinea pig but would heed warnings here. Don't think my pdoc would have any thoughts other than not to try it; he's conservative.

Thanks, Will
