I only saw the guy once but he was ok, very expensive (£70) for what we got out of him which was a recommendation for some other drugs which I already knew about and can get the GP to prescribe and an overview of the therapy and support services available from his staff which were also too expensive.

Im sticking with the NHS guys, the ones I have seen (4 different NHS psychiatrists over the last 8 years) have been no worse than the private guy I saw but a damn sight cheaper.
To be honest I find psychiatrists prescribing a bit of a waste of time. I can research pills myself and the GP can prescribe them, none of the pills I currently take are because of a psychiatrists visit, only one of them was the CPN's recommendation. So long as I stick to pills the GP is likely to have heard of or can prescribe without needing specialist attention then he will grudgingly scribble a script and get rid of me! I find the psychiatrist is more useful when it comes to discussing other issues like symptoms though, it can be helpful to get a more professional overview of what you are experiencing and also to know you getting a reasonable mental health checkup, I have never had much to complain about that really. Only problems have been when I have been unable to express myself which is hardly the psychiatrists fault.
When Im in hospital its a different matter I take what they give me until Im well enough to leave but I really doubt I could ever afford private inpatient care.
