In reply to What is Tranxene, besides an anti anxiety med., posted by rjlockhart98 on July 16, 2005, at 14:50:53
Tranxene is a long-lasting anxiolytic benzo, kinda like Klonopin, but not as strong mg per mg...I think its about as strong as valium or librium. Anyway, it seems that docs are in two camps with Tranxene: most of them seem to ignore its very existence. The remainder of shrinks seem to love the stuff to no end and use it to the exclusion of most other benzos. I've taken it, and I liked it. It was strong, but gentler than Klonopin (no sedative-induced depression or cognitive impairment). It also seemed to cause fewer problems than Librium, which was nice...plus the dosing was Klonopin-like, so I didnt have to re-dose all day like with Ativan. From what I understand, there is some research that indicates it helps treat those who are both profoundly anxious and depressed...other benzos can be a mixed bag in this department; sometimes they help, sometimes they make the depression worse, and some, like Xanax, help both anxiety and depression but seem to carry a higher risk of addiction/dependence (and more severe withdrawal) than Tranxene. Unlike some of the other benzos, I dont think its used ever for epilepsy or convulsions or alcohol withdrawal.
