There actually was a good study of dexamethasone for depression, showing that a short ride on small doses could lift depressed mood more quickly than SSRIs, and that it might be worth investigating as a method for inducing very quick response in some patients, while waiting for an antidepressant to kick in. On the other hand, the side effects could be killer.
One thing to remember about steroids is that their effects can last up to a year. That's not something I'd want to screw around with, no matter how bad things seemed.
My advice? It's a pain in the patootie to wait for a medication to work. But it's worth it, in the end, once you find something that works. Those same doctors we complain about do have one advantage over us: they know more about physiology and pharmaconetics than we do. That's why they get to have their names on the top of the page, you know?
Good luck.
