> hi! i have been on prozac for 4 years, only 20mgs. at the moment, but i am totally fed up with sexual side-effects and emotional blunting/apathy and would like to try something much more cost effective and less sexually debilitating. i know tofranil, [impramine] is an old standard drug, and may not be as effective for my moderate ocd, but i really feel a need to try something outside the ssri class.

Imipramine was the first AD that I took that I could tolerate and that worked. It worked great. It was like the world was in color instead of being gray like it had been. I was on it about a year then was taken off it. I got depressed again. I tried desipramine, but the side effects were worse so I went back to imipramine. This time it didn't work quite as well but it was still effective. The side effects were a bit problematic. Very dry mouth, nasal congestion, some anorgasmia, and some insomnia which might not have been from the imipramine - I was having insomnia anyway. Also some postural hypotension. All in all, it was a good drug for me for a couple of years. I only went off it because they came out with Prozac and my doc put me on that to lessen side effects. Don't let the side effect thing scare you though. I am extremely sensitive to side effects and unable to take a lot of meds because of that. I'd say go for it. Let us know how it works.
