Temporary increase in meds while facing crisis??

Posted by University on May 26, 2005, at 14:54:04

I've been on Prozac and Ritalin for many years now, and haven't had a depression for over seven years. I take the occasional Klonopin (~1mg/month) for anxiety.

But I'm facing the possibilty of ending a two year relationship--one that I myself feel should probably end (i.e., i'm not being "dumped"). Nevertheless, while I know that profound grief, sadness, and anxiety is certainly merited here, I always find myself on that "verge" of going over the edge to depression--where it become all-encompassing, and eventually has nothing to do with the break-up pain.

I've been taking more Klonopin and Ritalin at certain times where I feel like I'm spiraling down--not to avoid pain, per se, but to avoid that certain sinking pain that has always precipitated my major dep. episodes. I'm going to see my pdoc soon to discuss this, and I'm sure he'll be supportive.

I just wondered whether anyone else had some advice on this matter. I'm also going back to my psychotherapist next week--I saw him for ten years, but feel I need to see him during this difficult and confusing time.

Thanks in advance for any insight :/

JM
