Pindolol blocks the 5-HT1a serotonin autoreceptors from "seeing" serotonin. These receptors are located somatodendritically. What this really boils down to is that the increase in serotonin produced by SSRIs is not allowed to signal the neurons to turn-off their production and release of serotonin.
