I'm curious what your situation was when you say that xanax saved your life at one point, but today, for you, it's not a good drug to take long term.

I've used xanax for almost 8 years and every time I've tried to quit it's been pure hell. Now I feel stuck with it. There was a time when it did help me; now it's a hindrance and I feel it contributes to more depression than I would normally have. Additionally, I think I'm now prone to seizures from trying to withdraw. These meds (benzos) are life savers and life crushers.
