300mg isn't particularly high. It's probably about average. The official maximum dose is 450mg (which I take), but there are doctors who prescribe up to 600mg. However, it might not have been wise of your doctor to start you out at 300, if that's what he did. He could have started you at 150 or even 100 and push the dose up gradually over one to two weeks, even longer if it takes you time to adjust to it.
