My experience with Depakote was similar to the others; it was great for anxiety and made me feel mellow, but ultimately I still went through the BP depressions and had to look for alternatives. (That was when I went on Lamictal.)
FWIW, Depakote made me absolutely RAVENOUS. I had just come out of a long hypomania (and finally gotten the BP2 Dx after 12 years on ADs), and was thin as a rail. I figured I could eat whatever i wanted, and Boy, did I ever. We're talking entire cakes in one sitting. Next thing I knew I'd gained 20 pounds, and FAST. I continued ballooning until I couldn't stand the way I looked anymore and insisted on a change.
I never fully regained my former sveltitude, but at least I'm not a lunatic now.
