Anything that has an SSRI component in it does that to my jaw - constant tightness, even jaw muscle tremors. Effexor as well as Cymbalta did this and I couldn't handle it as my TMJ is quite bad. If Effexor is helping you otherwise, to protect your TM joint you need to get the bite guard. The TMJ expert I went to ordered an MRI of my jaw as said that it looked like the joint of a 65 y/o (I was 45) and to protect it I should wear the bite guard 24 hours per day, including during eating. He advised moist heat and massage, which I could do myself. He also recommended trigger point injections. I also found that the myofascial release, massage and manipulation techniques that my Physical Therapist uses is very effective, but of course insurance won't pay very long for that. Muscle relaxants don't work with me, but they might with you.
At this point, I refuse to take anything with much of an SSRI component. The jaw tightness equates to pain with me because of Fibromyalgia. So I guess you need to decide if the Effexor is worth it or maybe try something else. Cymbalta may work for you as the SSRI and NERI components are more balanced. With Effexor, you get more SSRI at lower doses. What dose are you on?
Another interesting question is what other medication might be given, other than muscle relaxants, to counteract this effect?
Good luck.

> I have been on Effexor for about six weeks now, starting to come out of the black hole, but had a horrendous time at the dentist like I've never had before with my jaw - he said I have severe TMJ - has anyone else experienced this? I used to have clicking and popping, but never soreness like this. I wonder if its related to all the yawning I do now? And the clenching of my teeth at night?? Anyone else??
