Club soda is not an alkalyzing agent, even though it contains some bicarbonate ion. The bicarbonate ion forms as water abstracts a proton from dissolved carbon dioxide. The products, hydronium ion and bicarbonate ion, cancel each other out (with respect to acidification/alkalization).

Sodium bicarbonate is a net alkalizer, because the sodium ion stands in place of what would be the hydronium (acid) ion. So, taking sodium bicarbonate will consume acid in the stomach, alkalizing it (and making you burp carbon dioxide gas).
