Sad but true, this happens with some antidepressant. Some call it "SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) induced apathy". Speaking from personal experience, it sucks. A lot. If your boyfriend is willing, and I imagine he would be, why not try another anti-depressant, or add one? Personally, Paxil made me about as caring as a statue, but meds that affect more than one neurotransmitter--like cymbalta, which I take now and hits neurepinephrine and serotonin, or effexor, or tofranil-- don't have this effect on me; they get rid of the depression, but don't seem to make me apathetic or dull. If he'd rather not withdraw from an anti-depressant and start all over with a new one (understandable), lots of things can be added, especially if he's just at 5mgs...wellbutrin (now available in generic), effexor, a tricyclic such as tofranil or elavil, straterra (generally for add/adhd, but apparently good for some depression cases), cymbalta (my current favorite), etc. Please don't give up on the situation just yet, but do try to change up the meds so this isn't an issue anymore. Good luck!
