Depression with a temper Looking for new med

Posted by Rosee on February 6, 2005, at 22:43:26

I am looking for suggestions, preferably by those with experience using the recommended drug and knowing somebody like me using the drug.
Here's me: female, 39, high stress job, long term chronic mild to moderate depression with periodic boughts of moderate to sever depression. Was good weight whole life and fit until experiencing the sever depression, then had no appetite and lost too much weight.

At 32 was prescribed Paxil.....excellent for the depression, went back to normal weight and then some, and then some more. Found myself being too mouthy and too opinionated and a bit too extroverted. But hey it didn't bother me b/c the Paxil really was very good for the depression.

40 pounds later (after going off the Paxil myself ..ouch) I asked my Doc for suggestions for another drug. Prozac was prescribed. Loved the prozac. With diet and exercise. I lost about half the weight gain and hit a plateau. Felt "normal". Prozac was the right fit. After a few years I needed a larger dose. Then I needed another larger dose just a few months later. It didn't help. For some reason Prozac just stopped working in me.

Since I was going to try to quit smoking the Doc put be on Wellbutrin and tapered down the Prozac. I quit smoking and stayed on Wellbutrin but didn't particularly like it. I was mean, sometimes. I would get these "mean spikes", and feel like I was furious. The Dr. added Effexor.

I went off the wellbutrin and went on the effexor and I have been on it about 1 1/2 to 2 years. I don't like it. I'm stupid and forgetful. I'm not sad but I don't feel "right", maybe kind of too tempermental and irritable. The most "right" or "normal" I ever felt was with prozac b/f it stopped working.

I'm going through the effexor withdrawals now and feel yuck but even with the yuck I don't want to be back on it. I don't like ME on Effexor.

So......any suggestions
