Hi all-
Just thought you might like an update on my trial of oxycodone to help my TRD.
I've been on Oxycontin 10mg (along with my other meds) for about 2 weeks now. It certainly helps tremendously. I don't feel high nor do I feel a hunger for it everyday, etc. In fact, I barely notice when I take it - it's very smooth acting and "in the background."
PROS
Decreased apathy
Increased motivation
Decreased fatigue
Increase in mood/general feelings of well being
No suicidal thoughts, fantasies in 2 weeks
Decreased negative repsonse to critizism
Increase in social behaviors
Sleep seems better
Decrease in appetite (good for me)CONS
Problems with concentration & focus - thoughts muddled
Sometimes feel sleepy
Not sure it's as effective as hydrocodone
A little worried about eventually becoming tolerant - although no signs of thatAs you can see the pros outweigh the cons - but it's not a miracle treatment because I still have bad days and still have a chronic low-grade depression (that my therapist thinks can be delt with through therapy). I'd still like more motivation to get up and do stuff - maybe that's being effected by the sleepiness I get from the oxycodone? Hydrocodone give me much more of a stimulant effect. All in all I'd rather be on the Oxycodone than off. It certainly has made me the most stable mood-wise in a LONG TIME.
My doc did say we could always switch to hydrocodone - however, it would be the difference between taking one long-release tab and multiple short acting tabs/day.....I dunno..I'm still at odds about switching...
I see my doc tomorrow so we'll see what happens. Another thing: I thank the maker that I am fortunate enough to have a doctor who is willing to try opiates and only wish they'd do more studies with them for depression.
I'll keep you all updated....
Thanks
Jerry
