I've never tried regular Xanax but Klonopin and Xanax XR work well for my anticipatory anxiety and GAD. Ativan works well for anticipatory anxiety for me also but since on the Xanax XR and the Lexapro I have not had to take it. When on .5 Klonopin or even up to 1 mg. Klonopin daily I would take Ativan when I had breakthrough anxiety.
Part of my anxiety disorder is extreme fear of taking meds but I'm getting over that. I held back for years without taking anything then when I did take meds I weaned down to the lowest dose and stayed there for several years (.5 Klonopin). Only recently have I been seeing a new pdoc and tweaking meds and I feel so much better!
