Effexor XL for social anxiety? Any experiences?

I have just been put on Effexor XL to treat my social anxiety.
I'm very dubious at to Effexors efficiency, but the doctor assured me it was "the dogs bollocks".

I'd just like to know what peoples experiences with Effexor have been like, has it helped anyones social anxiety?
How long will I need to take it before I know whether it will work or not?
