Lamictal is a good med, as is trileptal...the real difference for me were the side effects. Lamictal gave me stomach aches, headaches, and a rash (the rash is not common in lamictal users, but it's not exactly rare, either). Trileptal, on the other hand, didn't seem to present any problems. Each dose increase helped me sleep better for a few days and I didn't really have side effects. Trileptal, as you probably know, is just tegretal with an added oxygen molecule...this cleans up the tegretal in terms of side effects. The problem is trileptal isn't as well studied for bipolar or other disorders as tegretal or lamictal, so a lot of docs stick to the tried and true. Other docs treat trileptal just as cleaned-up tegretal and Rx it frequently.
