Thyroxine and heart problems

Posted by cubic_me on October 27, 2004, at 5:13:57

A month ago my pdoc prescribed thyroxine (alongside my Effexor) for resistant depression. I went to my GP a few days ago for something completely unrelated, and he said that he was worried I was going to ask for a repeat prescription for thyroxine, because in his opinion it is too risky (due to it increasing the likelihood of heart problems in later life). I'm not so much bothered that my pdoc prescribed this med, but that he didn't inform me of the risks or ask about my family history of cardiac problems. I had an appointment with him today, where he just laughed off the risks as if they were trivil - but why did the GP have so much concern?

There is hardly any research on thyroxine in treatment of depression, or on its effects on the heart. Does anyone here have any info? I'd be really grateful as I don't know what move to make from here.
