Got this from the National Sleep Foundation:
---------------------
Approval Sought for Novel Approach to Insomnia TreatmentTakeda Global Research & Development Center announced that it has submitted a new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market Ramelteon (TAK-375), its investigational drug for insomnia.
What makes this drug different? Ramelteon is a chemical modification of melatonin, a natural, sleep-inducing hormone. According to Takeda, as a medication, it would target the MT1 and MT2 receptors of the brain -- unlike other sleeping pills that target the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. Takeda hopes that targeting the MT1 (thought to regulate sleepiness) and MT2 receptors (thought to help the body shift easily between day and night) located in the brain's suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) will help promote sleep and regulate the body's sleep-wake cycle.
