I think the others have some good advice on therapy and self image. As for meds, it is hard to tell how you're going to react until you take it. Effexor always killed my appetite, but I believe it also simultaneously slowed down my metabolism. It wound up being weight neutral for me, which is fine, because I am normal weight, anyway. There was an article in Consumer Reports recently listing weight gain on antidepressants from 1,664 survey respondents. The numbers are so close on most of them I don't think they mean very much, other than the number for Wellbutrin:
AD........% people reporting weight gain
Effexor.....21%
Prozac......19%
Celexa......18%
Zoloft......17%
Paxil........22%
Wellbutrin...12%Effexor was reported as the most effective AD, 76% of respondents reporting that it helped a lot. Wellbutrin was least effective, with 57% reporting that it helped a lot. The numbers for Prozac, Celexa, and Zoloft were virtually all the same, at 69%, 68%, and 67% respectively. Paxil was reported as only slightly more helpful than Wellbutrin, with 59% of respondents saying it helped a lot.
