DM,
I wasnt' sure if I was bipolar either, I'm still not, my therapist never thought so either. There are so many different levels of it as I'm sure you know by now through your own research. I did the same, even went to a support group where I was offered EVEN MORE info. I decided then and there that too much information was not good for me. I didn't have the lows of fetal position, nor the highs of breaking things-rage or a state of euphoria, but there were alot of things I could identify with. The not being able to shut my brain off and get to sleep (racing thoughts) even on trazadone, and during the day just HAVING to do everything myself because it was the only way it would get done correctly (perfectly, in my case) even though I was doing several things at the fevered pitch at the same time and couldn't for the life of me understand why everyone else didn't work like me. That was explained as part of racing thoughts, jumping from one task to another. I thought I just had extremely good work ethics. LOL
Anyway, Depakote was like smoking pot munchies. I'd be enjoying one snack and thinking about the next one I'd make. Everything tasted so good. I felt too high during the day so my doctor let me take 250 mg at night no extended release. Which worked fine unless I woke up or stayed up too late and I'd be like "oh-oh, the depakote kicked in, padlock the fridge!" That's why we gain weight, it doesn't change our metabolism, it makes us eat. (and eat and eat) I did lose weight though doing the very moderate Atkins thing. No pasta, bread, rice, fruit, beans. I didnt' really measure the other carb count. I now am off all meds (was on effexor too for 1 yr 5 months)
Good Luck with whatever you decide and like someone wrote in this thread, you are in control of your well-being. Pdocs don't really like to hear that we've done our research because we are amatuers and they paid a lot of money for school. But we are the ones who have to live with the effects of what we take, we pay them to figure out what we need to avoid the unpleasantness. We do not have to take anything we do not want to just because they think it's good for us.
