As per requested by my brother and intellectual heavyweight, Chemist, here is a thread on Zyprexa, for which i will state what I know about it and personal experiences....
Pros/uses
1. Psychotic illness- usual starting dose is 10mg, titrating to 20-30mg. Zyprexa has been shown to unequivocally benifit psychotic patients...those with overvalued ideas (not quite psychotic, but somewhat close to it) can gain relief from as little as 2.5mg.2. OCD- In my experience and from what I have read Zyprexa is an excellant augmenter for OCD- especially if their is some mild psychotic element to it.
3. Hypnotic- For many, but not me, Zyprexa provides a very strong hypnotic/sedative effect.
4. I believe it is cardiovascularly safe, no lipid abnormalities reported (to my knowledge) and EPS potential, including TD, seems to be EXTREMELY low. Out of probably 170 anecdotes, I have read 1 or 2 people developing mild TD (which abated)
5. Depression- for many, especially in conjuction with a standard antidepressant, Zyprexa exerts an unequivocal AD effect...usual dosage 2.5-10mg.
6. Anxiety- also has anxiolytic properties.
7. Can curb racing thoughts and agitation very quickly.
CONS
1. Withdrawal- quite a few have strong insomnia on withdrawal, which necissitates short term benzo usage or a sedative AD. Some don't- I never have. In fact, I have NO w/drawal sx from Zyprexa. There you go, I'm sure I missed a lot, so tell me if you disagree or could add something!
