There are a few theories on why AP's can augment AD's. The first is that they tend to block a few serotoin receptors resulting in improved sleep and anxiety. The second theory is that they adress overactive limbic dopamine which purportedly can cause dark moods.
They may also posess mood stabalizing qualities which can help prevent depression.
