In reply to SEDATIVES FOR OCD...?, posted by pretty_paints on August 7, 2004, at 8:02:21
> Hi there. My pdoc is talking about putting me on a sedative for my (mild) OCD. I'm already on 300mg Efexor for depression/anxiety etc.

I had some sucess on prozac in the past, it destroyed the loop, took away my desire to do these little things. But I'm guessing that a sedative will work in a completely different way. I'm curious as to how it will make me feel. Will the OCD URGES still be there? I'm worried that all that will happen is, I'll feel tired and sedated, still obsessing/compulsing just as much, but with NO ENERGY to actually carry out the obsessions/compulsions. If thats the case, arnt I just going to get intensly frustrated??

Hi there, common sedatives are Xanax, Valium, and Ativan. Usually the sedatives do exactly what their name leads you to believe: they sedate or calm you down. E.g. If I go to a restaurant and a fly lands on my meal - rather than jump up and down and scream and holler a sedative might help calm me.A sedative isn't really a drug for OCD just to calm down you reaction to certain things. A sedative will not help you resist the urge to check, count, wash, etc.
