clinical trial for depression- UMDNJ in New Jersey

Posted by Emme on August 4, 2004, at 14:28:56

Hi All,

I just found out about an interesting clinical trial being conducted at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Jersey. They are doing a non-medication trial of heart rate variability feedback to treat depression. HRVB has been studied to treat various other conditions such as high blood pressure. These researchers are testing a theory that there is a link between depression and the autonomic nervous system.

This sounds intriguing. They want unipolar people. The researcher with whom I spoke thought it would probably be useful for bipolar depression, but they have to be strict at this stage of trials. If you're on meds, they want you to have been on them a few months so that your body is adjusted to them.

Anyway, here's the notice, and also a link to UMDNJ's list of clinical trials.

Do you feel sad, irritable, tired, and uninterested? Do you have concentration, appetite, and sleep problems? You may be suffering from depression. Dr. Paul Lehrer, of the Department of Psychiatry, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway, NJ, is conducting a research study using a new, non-drug technique to treat depression. Treatment does not involve medication. Participants must be between the ages 18-75 and medically stable. This investigational treatment is provided at no cost. For more information, please call Dr. Maria Karavidas 732-235-4628.
