My question is this... since I've lowered my dose, I've been feeling nauseous and have had flu-like symptoms... is this normal? Or I should rephrase that... is this typical?

Yes, they are normal withdrawl symptoms. You could take some Benadryl or Phenergan to help with the nausea & other symptoms. Your plan to taper off sounds OK. Don't step down the dosage again until the withdrawl symptoms of the last step down are gone.
