In reply to Chronic Pain Percocet - Doctor To D.C. Percocet, posted by Corafree on July 8, 2004, at 0:59:46
Hello Corafree,
I have had chronic back pain since 1981 when I was struck by a truck while riding a 10 speed bike. I have had 2 failed back surgeries, numerous injections, nerve blocks, extended physical therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback, etc. to no avail. I was forced to retire on disability and have only been able to work on a part time basis for 7 years until 2 years ago when I was forced to quit working even on a part time basis when my chronic back pain had worsen.
Initially, all my doc would Rx was Tylenol/Codeine. I was taking 60mg 4 times daily for pain. Eventually, I was referred to a pain specialist md and I was able to get an Rx for Oxycontin. Oxycontin worked very well both as a pain med and AD. However, I had to keep increasing the dose until I got to the max dose of 160mg and even at the max dose, Oxy was no longer providing extended pain relief. I decided to quit Oxy after 2 years, because the Kaiser mds were making it very difficult for me to continue getting refills. It took several months to taper off Oxycontin and in two days I will be Oxy free as I am only taking one 20mg pill down from 8 pills. If you can get Oxycontin with no hassle from your health insurance and are willing to take it for the rest of your life, then I recommend it. However, if you think you will be taking it only for a short time, I would not recommend it because of the horrible withdrawals side effects when you are ready to taper off it.
Currently, I went back to taking Tylenol/Codeine 3's, 2 tabs (60mg) 4 times a day. Although Codiene is not as potent as Oxycontin, I don't have to worry about getting an RX refill or experiencing horrible withdrawals side effects because with Codeine I can skip a dose for a day or weeks without experiencing withdrawals. Of course when I stop taking Codeine, my depression is even worse and I am practically bedridden. Hope this helps you. Good luck.

> I have chronic pain from C-2-3, C3-4, and C5-6 disc extrusions due to injury. Trigger point and epidural injections have not worked. My primary care physician and the pain docs (2) I've seen have prescribed the only thing that helps. Surgery is not an option. Now, they are going to taper me off. I am so scared it will be the end of me. I also suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. At this same time, I am being tapered off Klonopin for my anxiety, and of course I am more anxious than ever before. Anyone living in horrible chronic pain? Anyone have an affordable answer to pain control? Thank you for a response.
