Dear StevenInLB
Thank you very much for your reply. I am certainly encouraged to try it.

> I have tried Tianeptine on and off a few times over the past year. I have found it to be most benign of the antidepressants I have tried (Prozac, Effexor, Welbutrin, Celexa, Zoloft, Remeron). The side-effects are practically nil compared to the SSRIs. The only real side effects I noticed were some increased heart rate and a slight transient dizzyness at times. Sometimes I would feel floored for 10 minutes shortly after taking a dose; this would pass quickly though. The effects of the drug are ususual. I found it to be highly anxiolytic, which one poster refered to as an intoxicated feeling. This occurs very rapidly as it would with a benzo. I would not say it is like alcohol intoxication; it is a very clean relaxation, without sleepiness. I also found my social anxiety and verbal fluency were helped by tianeptine. The recommended dose of 3x per day I felt was too high, and I found 1-2 per day was enough. Paradoxically, taking more than 2 would make me anxious. I have never felt that it is a great antidepressant, but definitely a good alternative to benzos for anxiety. I however have never taken it for an extended period.

I still consider Tianeptine to be a great option especially for people who become manic/anxious on the ssri's as I do. Overall it is a very clean drug, without the emotional blunting, sexual side effects, and discontinuation symptoms/withdrawal of the ssri's. It is one of the few antidepressants I would consider taking again.

There is certainly literature to support it's effectiveness as an antidepressant, as well as being effective in ADD (eg http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15034228) and in asthma (eg http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=9807972).
