Nardil and food craving

Posted by Tai Chi on June 26, 2004, at 4:55:04

Has anyone had experience with intense food cravings on Nardil or any other antidepressant? I take Nardil 30mg per day. It has proved to be an excellent antidepressant for me, after having tried many, many other drugs and cocktails, as well as ECT. I am following a low carbohydrate diet (Atkins), and this mitigates the cravings to a large degree. I need to keep my carbohydrate intake fairly low (around twenty grams a day), otherwise the cravings go really off the charts (it's no problem downing an entire pint of Haagen Dazs ice cream Right after eating a full meal) . Despite my best efforts (discipline, exercise, trying to limit caloric intake), I’m gaining 2lbs. a month. I’d hate to extrapolate this trend out for a couple of years.

I had some cravings on Remeron a few years ago, and I gained 25lbs. the first eighteen months. I was able to take the weight off using the Zone diet. Remeron stopped working for me after four years, despite many attempts to augment it. The Zone diet has way too many carbohydrates for my current situation.

I find the food cravings distressing; self discipline does not seem to work. I’d appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks.

By the way, this bulletin board is excellent! I’ve appreciated the opportunity to join with a community of fellow travelers.
