If you haven't tried Neurontin I would definitely give that a shot. At one point my psychopharmacologist thought I had bipolar-2 and suggested Neuorontin for anxiety/depression and mood-cycling. I wasn't that depressed though.

My understanding is that Neurontin has been show by clinical studies to be ineffecitve for treatment of bipolar disorder. However, it worked great on my anxiety.

Other than drowsiness associated with tapering up on it, I didn't have any side effects either.

The other things I could think of would be atypical neuroleptics like seroquel perhaps but that would really be a last resort if you are trying to avoid benzos at all costs.
