With any kind of BP you have to be stabilised with one or two mood stabilisers or an antipsychotic. After you are stabilised, if you are depressed, then you add antidepressants. Effexor or SSRI's alone will bring out mania or a mixed state if you are BP.

What sort of problems did you have with SSRI's?
