I don't know of any studies, but it's the best thing I have been on for my bipolar. It's known for NOT having many side effect. Amazing what an oxygen atom can do! I took Tegretol for a while and the side effects were awful. This is the first mood stabiliser that I have been on that hasn't had a bad impact on cognition and memory.

I am taking 900 mg currently and aside from feeling a bit tired, I haven't noticed many side effects. It's actually helped lift me out of a horrid month of very rapid cycling. But, I wonder what effect it will have long-term on my mental abilities.
