In reply to Psychoses from weaning off antipsychotics??, posted by hundredhugs on May 17, 2004, at 10:02:25
> I had a Manic episode awhile back and it is time to wean me off the antipsychotics and the episode is over and I am stable now. I am under a tremendous amount of stress and not sleeping well and we are weaning off the antipsychotics. I didn't mention the not sleeping well or the stress to the pdoc, I didn't think of it until later. I am on 4 mg of risperdal and 15 mg of abilify. she decreased the risperdal by 1 mg thursday. I had problems with paranoia and auditory hallucinations to the point i was scared. Can weaning off anitpsychotics cause this? Or do you think it is stress and sleep related or both? I appreciate you input.
Have you experienced these symptoms before? Have they occurred in the past as symptoms of previous manic episodes?
Perhaps it is *not* time to wean you off of antipsychotics. Unless you can substitute the antipsychotic with a mood-stabilizing drug from a different class, I don't think your system will allow you to discontinue the Risperdal right now. This would be especially true if you are currently experiencing an increase of psychosocial or physiological stresses. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know that there is a medical precedent indicating that there is a rebound psychosis produced by the discontinuation of an antipsychotic that will resolve on its own without further treatment. I don't think that your emerging psychotic symptoms will go away by themselves.
