I sympathasize with your complaint of being what, in the 50's, psychiatrists classified as a "socially inhibited patient."
I've got social anxiety disorder, but also ADD. This means I take Klonopin, which makes me calm enough to realize talking is less important than listening to what others have to say... and Desoxyn, an ADD stimulant that causes me to talk a lot unless I remember to take my Klonopin.
You're fine the way you are. If you're anxious, treat that-- but don't think it centers around not talking enough. Anxiously talking someone's head off is far more obvious than anxiously lying around with nothing to say to someone. Trust me, I've been in both experiences, and in retrospect realize one extreme is better than the other.
I've never had an embarassing moment not saying anything, but I've had lots of embarassing things that I've said.
It's also important to keep in mind people actually appreciate and like those who listen to them more than those who make them feel like they're fighting to get a word in. It sounds like you simply feel anxious in your head, which makes you feel as though you have some duty to talk more than you do. The secret is to appear concerned about what others say to you, because this is ultimately how people get friends in the first place.
