Meds that affect GABA

Posted by BIGDaddyachmed69 on May 9, 2004, at 21:16:02

My pdoc has diagnosed me with severe social anxiety, so I feel that the more meds I'm on that alter the transmission of GABA the better off I'll be. I know that there's probably more to it, that serotonin and dopamine are likely involved. I take Paxil, so I've got that covered...I don't know of any drugs that have an effect on dopamine. I think Wellbutrin and Abilify do in some way, I'm not entirely sure. Right now, in addition to Paxil I'm on Lamictal, Neurontin and Gabitril. I've read that Lamictal modulates the transmission of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. I'm also aware of the fact that Neurontin is structurally related to GABA, but doesn't necessarily alter its transmission. Biopsychiatry.com states that some neurons that respond to gabapentin are GABAergic. Gabitril is of course a GABA reuptake inhibitor. Anyone think that this is the way to go? I know I have WAY too much time on my hands, it must be my OCD...
