Need Zyprexa advice

Posted by kotsunega on May 7, 2004, at 18:24:18

Four years ago I was chronically manic with psychotic features and started on 20mg daily of Zyprexa. It was the first thing that ever worked to control my mania. I have taken that dose ever since. I also have inattentive ADD.

Well, in February of this year I had gastric bypass surgery and I have now lost about 30 lbs. I find my inattention at work is increasing. The Ritalin I take for it is not really effective for me like it used to be.

I'm trying to sort out my medication dilemma and I'm wondering if too much Zyprexa, now that I've lost some weight, is exacerbating my inattentive condition or if it is just that the Ritalin pooped out. I've tried Adderall and Dexedrine, and neither one worked with Zyprexa (they did work for me many years ago before I became manic and was put on Zyprexa.

I know Dopamine plays a roll in both mania and ADD and Zyprexa has dopamine antagonist properties (good for the mania; bad for the ADD). Is it possible if I reduce my Zyprexa dose that I could find a happy medium where my mania would be reasonably controlled, but my inattention problems would be reduced?

Thanks for any thoughts.
