In reply to HELP! Effexor XR and non-XR max dose difference?, posted by jerimycoplo on May 3, 2004, at 19:40:55
> Hi, I was wondering why the max approved dose for normal effexor is 375mg is for effexor xr it is 225 mg? It does not make much sense. All the XR is is extended release. This should not make the blood concentration of the drug any higher at the same dose (mg).
> Any ideas why this is?I can tell you exactly why this is. . . . Because when Wyeth (the manufacturer) was getting approval for the XR version (several years later than the regular version), they only tested up to a max of 225. They never bothered to get tests above that amount done due to the expenses of running these tests for the FDA. Any doctor or psychiatrist who has ANY idea of what they are talking about will tell you that the maximum safe dose between the two does not vary. In fact, there are studies showing that 600 mg of Effexor (xr or regular) can be safe so long as blood pressure is monitored. I too take 300 mg of XR, works great, but you have to monitor your blood pressure at that dose. Good luck, and don't worry about what the package inserts say, they are usually not up to date.
