Prozac vs. Lexapro to perk up a depressed BP

Posted by Random on April 14, 2004, at 21:21:31

Hello all,

I am going to see my pdoc tomorrow and am going to ask for a medication change.

I'm Bipolar I and I am currently taking:

Lamictal 200mg/day
Wellbutrin XL 300mg/day
Amitryptaline 50mg/day

I've been sleeping for 12-15 hours a day and most of the time I can't seem to find pleasure in anything. I have no motivation and I can't concentrate very well. I'm not really sleepy while I'm awake, but when I do go to sleep I sleep a looong time.

Last time I saw the doctor, he asked me to "Pick an SSRI, any SSRI." Since I've never had much luck with SSRIs, I asked him to put me on the amitryptaline (elavil) because it has worked for me in the past.

My depression has eased up a bit but I've been constipated this whole month since I've been on it. When I have managed to have a movement, it came out as diarhea. Not cool.

I would like to hear about your personal experiences with SSRIs, Prozac and Lexapro in particular. I tried zoloft awhile back but it didn't seem to do much.

Also, I read a post that mentioned someone with bipolar II using ritalin for inability to concentrate and lack of motivation. I'm pretty sure that I'll get some serious LOL's from my pdoc, but I don't suppose it would hurt to ask him about it.

Thanks,
Random
