To answer your first question, yes I for one have struggled with meds. It can take some time to find a combination of meds that work well together for you. And...it's such an individual thing that it makes the struggle very personal...and lonely.
But, to answer your second question, I have found through med trial and error a particular drug that makes me normal again. I have BP 1 and ADD issues. I nearly lost my marriage and my job several years ago because the meds I was on were not effective. When my psydoc made a change in my meds, well, suddenly everything came together for me. I have a solid marriage again and am successful in my job -- no more mixed state dysphoric mania problems.
Now, I'm struggling with meds again in a small way. One drug for my ADD is no longer as effective as it used to be so I am investigating my options to make a change to something else that will work. Again, back to trial and error until we (me and my psydoc) get it right.
All I can really offer is that you just have to be open to trying different things until you find something that works. My son was being treated with one med for quite awhile, but it wasn't really helping, so he switched to something else and just recently he has found a successful combination to treat his disorders. He's having very good luck with Effexor and Adderall. Remember, we're all different in how we respond to medications and like I said earlier, it is trial and error...and it takes some effort and patience in the pursuit of the perfect medication.
