In reply to Zoloft 150 mg Severe diarrhea, posted by zo out on March 22, 2004, at 14:47:55
> I have been on Zoloft 150 for 5+ weeks-(previous to this 150 I was on 50 for 1 wk and 100 for a week) and the last 3+ weeks I have had a severe diarrhea with a dose of 150 mg of zoloft.- I have tried Immodium and a diarrhea diet with no help. My psydoc won't change the medication. I feel the Zoloft has helped me about 20% for depression. Previously I was on Celexa 20 for a year and a half and it left me a little manic. Recommendations please-I am losing hope.
Interesting, as usually the diarrhea patients experience on Zoloft is transient and goes away within a short time. This particular SSRI adverse effect is thought to be due to stimulation of serotonin-3 and 4 receptors. Adding Remeron, which blockades serotonin-3 receptors, may provide some relief.
Zoloft is the only SSRI type drug that has caused me diarrhea personally, but it only lasts about one day in my case. I believe the incidence of diarrhea with Zoloft is fairly high among the SSRIs. You could try a different SSRI, such as Prozac or Paxil, or perhaps Effexor, which acts similarly to an SSRI at lower dosages. You could also try a drug from a completely different class, such as Wellbutrin or nortriptyline. I think your doctor needs to be sensitive to the discomfort you are suffering on the Zoloft and its apparent lack of efficacy.
