Hi:
To be frank and honest, Bipolar takes time, ... probably at least two years from the day when you were dx'ed, that is VERY realistic term for Bipolar, unfortunately. Then, if you're in a hurry to try to fix Bp, there might be more confusion inside you. First, you may need to face the truth of this illness, Bp that is one of serious mental illnesses next to shizophrenia, whether Bp I or Bp II.
At the beginning, most of pdoc. are hesitant to say the truth on this, but from the experience along with the reading/hearing, Bp takes quite a while to get under control.
In regard to 'mood swings,' ... it sounds to me like you've been experiencing 'Rapid Cycler' because of frequency of your cycling even within one day, for that you may need not only Lithium also a potent med. like Anti-psycho.med. like Seroquel, Zyprexa, Risperdal and few moe newer ones to name.
Talk to your pdoc. at your next appt., because this form of Bp condition is NOT hard to control as long as you have a right med. combo. But, it might be NOT easy to find a right med. that would suit to your symptoms.
H.G.
